Countryside Alliance reissues guidance on dealing with saboteurs

The new guide outlines the threat saboteurs pose to those involved in shooting.

The Countryside Alliance has reissued copies of its guidance booklet, Saboteurs and Shooting.

The small guide is aimed at shoots across the UK and is available in time for the new season.

It outlines the threat saboteurs pose to those involved in shooting, highlights how problems can be dealt with under the law and how shoots can work to prevent problems in the future.

Robert Gray, campaigns director of the Countryside Alliance, said: "We hope that no shoot in Britain will ever need to use this guide, but experience tells us that this will not be the case.

"This is preventative medicine for shoots providing peace of mind in a world of unsavoury characters.

"Above all, we must all demonstrate our determination to protect our sport and the livelihoods of those who work within shooting, and ensure that any incidents involving saboteurs are dealt with as safely and quickly as possible."

This is a very interesting topic. As in England, we seem to have a simmular problem in Germany with saboteurs. However, there has been a German court decision that all costs related to such shoots, which might have been sabotaged, can be charged to groups who disturbe shooting days. Organisation costs, preparation costs, drivers, ammunition, travel expenses (of guests) and paid-back profits can mount up to quite substantial sums, which sabotage groups can be sued for successfully. We always have some former constables as assistant keepers on the estate, who can call in former collegues in the event of sabotage activities. They will note any ID of such individuals. It is my understanding that sabotaging of shoots has become a trend in England, as it is in Germany today. We have found the following strategy rather useful: On our estate there is a former constable as an assistant "keeper", who still has best connections to his former unit. If there is a disturbance of a shoot (which you cannot prevent completely) he calls-in his in former collegues. They will take ID's of sabotage groups. After court cases, which will take place, the sabotage organisations will be charged with all costs thinkable in such a shoot. You would be talking of preparation costs, organisation costs, travel expenses of guests, lost profits a.s.o. Kind regards from Germany
