The Hon. Simon Howard was recognised for his conservation work late last year, when the Castle Howard Estate Ltd. was awarded the first Yorkshire Grey Partridge Group Trophy.

The award was presented at the autumn meeting of the Yorkshire Grey Partridge group at Askham Bryan College. The judges felt that the estate went that extra mile to help grey partridges, by dedicating 1,000 acres of land for the creation of nesting, brood rearing and winter cover for the grey partridges.

Kenelm Storey, chairman of the Yorkshire Grey Partridge Group, commented: “This award recognises the considerable effort in time, money and imagination that has been committed on the Castle Howard Estate to wild game management. The vision and enthusiasm of Simon Howard has been converted into habitat provision, targeted predation control and supplementary feeding by his enthusiastic team of keepers, headed by Wyne Bennett.”

Mr. Bennett accepted the award on behalf of Mr. Howard, and he said: “I am chuffed to bits to be the first recipient of this magnificent trophy.”

Henrietta Appleton from the GWCT was one of the judges, and she commented: “ We encourage as many farming, landowning and shooting interests as possible to count the greys on their land and to let us know what they are doing to conserve them.”

Those interested in entering the Partridge Count Scheme should contact Neville Kingdon on 01425 651066 or visit www.gct.org.uk/partridgecountscheme.
