Information on the best shooting hotels for the wandering gun.

A selection of hotels around the country, which are perfect for shooting teams.

The George Hotel in Stamford, Lincolnshire, is a famous old coaching inn on the Old Great North Road. It is also very convenient for teams visiting local shoots, not least Burghley.

The Peacock at Rowsley, Derbyshire, is part of the Haddon Hall estate, which is owned by Lord Edward Manners. There are a number of excellent shoots in the area, such as Stanton-in-the-Peak and there is also some good fishing on the rivers Wye and Derwent.

Tylney Hall near Hook in Hampshire and Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club in East Sussex are both part of Elite Hotels and offer grand accommodation which is perfectly suited to shooting parties in the south east.

The Victoria at Holkham is part of the estate and is run by Viscount Coke, Lord Leicester's son. The hotel provides a perfect base to enjoy any of the great shoots in the area or just the natural beauty of north Norfolk.

– The Hotel du Vin in Tunbridge Wells is recommended by Kate Digweed (wife of George) as a good base for anyone shooting in East Sussex or west Kent.

– The Port Charlotte Hotel on Islay is a great place to stay if you are heading to this island for the twin charms of woodcock and whisky. Go after the full moon in November and the woodcock should have arrived. Eight distilleries, including Laphroaig, Bowmore and Lagavulin, are based here.

– The Corse Lawn Hotel is near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire and with two good sized private dining rooms is very popular with local shooting teams.

The Black Swan at Helmsley in north Yorkshire is smack in the middle of driven shooting territory, with the likes of Rievaulx on its doorstep, and not surprisingly, caters extremely well for the shoot team.

The Lygon Arms is in Broadway in the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds and is in a great place to explore this wonderful part of the country, whether in the shooting season or not.
